Who owns Earthlink?

Earthlink, a provider of Internet connection since 1994 has been "owned" by Windstream since March, 2017. In the deal, EarthLink was acquired by Windstream Holdings, Inc., in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.1 billion, including debt.

EarthLink shareholders received 0.818 shares of Windstream common stock for each EarthLink share that they owned. Windstream Communications provides high-speed broadband Internet, Digital TV packages, and phone service.

In 1994 Sky Dayton tried to get online and spent about a week trying to figure out how to connect his computer to the Internet. That inspired him to create Earthlink as an Internet service provider that was a more user-friendly alternative. The company went public on 1997. At one point Eathlink was the second largest Internet service provider in the US. AOL was the largest.

Even though Earthlink got its start with dial-up Internet now Earthlink has Earthlink Hyperlink fiber Internet as well as DSL and wireless Internet.
